Seam welding is a welding technique in which two similar or dissimilar metals are joined by supplying an electric current, resulting in nugget formation. These nuggets are typically formed in the form of butt or overlapping welding components. Do you know what these nuggets mean? The nuggets are nothing more than small pools of molten metal that form at a high electrical resistance location. One type of Resistance welding is seam welding.
Adavantages
Resistance seam welding produces clear welds with no gas formation or welding fumes. There is also no need to use filler materials to make the join, which can be made gas and liquid tight, opening up a variety of applications.
The process can be completely automated, making it highly repeatable. Furthermore, resistance seam welding can produce both a single seam weld and a parallel seam weld simultaneously.
Disadvantages
While resistance seam welding is fine for straight-line joins, the rollers cannot produce more complex curved welds. Welding is also not possible at internal corners or where other component features prevent the wheel electrodes from being accessed.
This method is also unsuitable for joining metal sheets thicker than 3mm. Because of the roller's speed, a highly skilled operator may be required to ensure the quality of the weld, and welding machinery is also costly.
